SARASOTA/BRADENTON, FL – Summer is always a difficult time for Meals on Wheels & the Food Bank of Manatee County as supplies run dangerously low while demand reaches a critical point with children out of school. In response to the community challenge issued recently by Maribeth Phillips, CEO of Meals on Wheels PLUS, Goodwill Manasota and 92.1 CTQ have partnered to host “Thankful Thursday” - a live remote broadcast to help restock the empty shelves of The Food Bank of Manatee.
Community members are invited to join Maverick & LuLu on Thursday, August 4th between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, at the live remote from Goodwill Manasota’s store and attended donation center at 8750 E State Road 70 in Bradenton. Those who bring non-perishable food or gently-used unwanted items to donate will be given a “$5 off any purchase of $25 or more” coupon. Donors will also be allowed to enter the Goodwill store to shop starting at 8:00 am - an hour before the regularly scheduled opening.
“While hunger issues are year round, the need is greater during the summer with children out of school. At the same time, donations typically drop off. We urgently need cereal, peanut butter, canned fruit, canned soup and canned vegetables, to help our families in need,” said Maribeth Phillips, CEO of Meals on Wheels PLUS, which operates The Food Bank of Manatee. “We can’t thank Goodwill enough for taking on our challenge in such a way that enables so many in our community to make a difference in the fight against hunger.”
The Food Bank of Manatee provides nutritional assistance and caring supportive services to individuals in need throughout Manatee County by distributing food to non-profit agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens and churches. Families in crisis situations can receive food packages on a temporary basis, as well as infant care baskets with formula, diapers, wipes and other baby essentials. Pet food is also available.
“Goodwill believes in helping our partners and being a resource to engage the community. We are extremely grateful to 92.1 CTQ, who embraces the same values and who helped provide the support to create this event,” said Goodwill Manasota vice president Veronica Brandon Miller. “Meals on Wheels PLUS, which operates The Food Bank of Manatee, is committed to our neighbors and we will do whatever we can to help support them. Together, we can make a difference to reduce hunger in our community.”
“We understand the need for action and are proud to assist the food banks with this donation drive,” said Miller. “It is important to help our local community during such extraordinary times. We hope that the Thankful Thursday live remote show will make a difference to increase awareness of those most needed donations and fill the shelves of The Food Bank of Manatee.”
