This week’s #MissionMonday is a letter we recently received from Sam, who lives at Beneva Oaks:
When Beneva Oaks Apartments opened in 1992, I was living with my sister and her family after an auto accident left me paralyzed and unable to work. I had spent my life working in difficult physical labor jobs as a pipefitter and plumber, and I suddenly found myself helpless. But regardless of the circumstances, I wanted to live on my own and not be a burden to my family. I heard of an opportunity in Sarasota because Goodwill Industries was opening an independent living facility for people with physical disabilities. I applied, and they called me in for an interview. Now, I have called this wonderful place "home" since September, 1992.
I am so grateful for this two decade plus opportunity to function on my own and not be a burden on others. I knew that I was capable of surviving on my own, but I could not earn the income I was accustomed to earning when I was working in the blue collar trades. I so much appreciate this apartment because I can live proudly, afford my rent, have doctors and therapists visit me here, and never "need anyone" to live independently and successfully all on my own-- because Goodwill provided me with a "hand up."
Thank you Goodwill Industries. For 23+ years I have been the fortunate benefactor of your conscious template to assist others that were open to helping themselves.
Thank you Sam for the kind words. We are very happy to know you’re able to live on your own, and are proud to call you a friend. It’s what we do…
