Ron had recently been released from jail and had a really hard time finding an employer who would take a chance on someone with a history of felony offense. Then he found work at Goodwill Manasota. Last week he sent his Career Development Facilitator the following letter:
I would sincerely like to thank you for saving me. I, like many others, had a barrier to employment and thanks to you guys I am able to hold my head high and smile again.
I came looking for a job at Goodwill back in 2015. I really didn’t know much about the place other than it is a thrift store. I just thought I would come in, get the application, fill it out and see what happened. Little did I know that I would meet a gentleman named Kevin who would not only help me with my job search and resume, but who would also serve as a sounding board. To put it simply, he showed me he cared. I have been working at Goodwill for one year. During this time I have had the pleasure to meet some outstanding people: people committed to excellence, and making a difference in other people’s lives.
All of this is very important to me. Although I am from this area, I have no family here. At times I felt like a man without a tribe. Thanks to you all, I feel welcomed and accepted. I am now part of something special; a family. With all these great people around, I find it hard to just stay complacent. They uplift me and motivate me. Ann, my GoodPartner Coach, much like Kevin, showed me she cared and worked with me to achieve some of my goals.
Some of the goals I achieved were buying fitness equipment, becoming a “Role Model Worker,” and buying a car, among other things. To be honest with you, I feel as if I am just getting started. I have many more goals and milestones I want to reach.
None of this would have been possible if it weren’t for second chances. Goodwill gave me a second chance and I am forever grateful. How could I ever repay such an act of kindness? The best answer I could come up with is to look forward on my path to great things. I just pay it forward day in and day out, while I hold my head high and smile.
We want to thank you, Ron. You are a shining example of what it means to change lives through the power of work. It’s what we do…
