Rebecca was a client for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and was referred to the Goodwill employment specialist a few years ago. A meeting was set up with Rebecca and her mother and they discussed Rebecca’s background and what her future job goals were. Rebecca was in her mid-thirties and had not worked much over the years and was concerned she wouldn’t be able to find a job.
Rebecca was always helping someone, and for the last year was unavailable for her job search because she was caring for several of her mother’s neighbors who were elderly and needed help in their home following serious surgeries. Rebecca said that caring for these recovering individuals had led her to conclude that she really wanted to be a nurse.
Her employment specialist suggested a possible path to her future which including getting her CNA license, working for a time to make sure it fit for her and then going through a bridge program; first for her LPN license and then to become a registered nurse. Rebecca really liked that idea and asked her employment specialist to intervene with VR to see if they would be willing to send her to another program.
Rebecca was approved and graduated from her CNA program with perfect attendance and very good grades. Then it was time to look for an employment opportunity and after much searching, a full time position was located at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Rebecca was nervous about interviewing but knew she was given the proper interview training by Goodwill. Rebecca started her new job recently and while she is still in her training period, she couldn’t be happier.
