Pete has been at Goodwill for the last two years and what a difference two years can make! When Pete was first hired, he summed up his work history by saying, “This is my first full-time job in a long time. I had been working part-time but mostly just sometimes.”
Pete was renting a room from a friend but never knew, from week to week, if he would be able to come up with enough money to pay the rent. He was also coming off a ten-day stay in the hospital for complications due to diabetes, and since he was uninsured at the time, he ran up quite a hospital bill.
When he was hired at Goodwill, Pete was able to get medical insurance. He started to see a doctor on a regular basis and is now able to afford his medication. He checks his insulin daily and Pete said at his last check-up, the doctor said his numbers were great.
Pete recently found an apartment and the rent is affordable, he used his Income Tax refund to take care of some car repairs. Last summer he attended an out-of-state family wedding and said that it was a good feeling to be able to put aside some extra money to book the flight.
Pete has a full-time job that he loves and that also pays his bills. He is able to take care of his medical needs and keep himself healthy and out of the hospital. He has a nice place to live and never worries that he won’t be able to pay the rent. Pete sums up his situation by saying that he is in a far better place in life now than before he started working for Goodwill. Pete is glad he works full-time for an employer that gives him a paycheck he can count on every two weeks. It’s what we do…
