Nikki walked into the Selby/Newtown Goodwill Job Connection office, just as she had every week for the last 18 months. She needed to use the computers and fax machine to submit her timesheet. She had been working as an uncertified caregiver and was required to email and fax her hours to her employer but she didn’t have a computer at home. The Selby office was a convenient place to stop by to send the documents.
This time was a little different, though. While Nikki was in the office, she overheard Goodwill career development facilitator Carlos Yancy and Trent Davis of Sarasota County Technical College discussing some new career training options. The conversation intrigued Nikki, a single mother who was interested in learning about new avenues to increase her income.
Nikki decided to ask some questions and made an appointment with Carlos. She requested one-on-one career counseling and indicated her interest in job placement services, too. Nikki explained that she wanted to stay in the healthcare field because she knew it was an industry where there would always be opportunities. Carlos agreed that this choice was an excellent one and that it was time for Nikki to take the next step in her career. Carlos helped Nikki to create a fabulous resume that outlined her skills and abilities. Then they worked on completing online applications for Sarasota Memorial Hospital and a local rehabilitation and senior care community. The companies both had employer-sponsored CNA programs available as well as on-site daycare services – a big plus for a single mom of three young children.
In no time at all, Nikki received invitations to interview with both companies. Carlos had helped Nikki practice her interview skills and she did well. She received job offers from both employers. She decided to accept a job with the hospital and, within two months, she enrolled in their CNA training program.
Today, Nikki is a certified nursing assistant. She earns $1.50/hour more than she had earned just a few months earlier — and her childcare is included! Nikki knows that now she has much more than just a job – she has a career with a path to a promising future. She is on her way to even bigger and better jobs because she just enrolled in the LPN program, which she will participate in while continuing to work at SMH. Once she completes this program, she will see her income increase by another $10 per hour.
Nikki is glad she happened to be in the Job Connection at exactly the right moment to change her life. It’s what we do …
