#MissionMonday - Matt

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - MattMatt came into the Job Connection office desperate for a job. There was not enough food in his fridge, his house was in foreclosure, and the dealership had just repossessed his wife’s car.

Matt filled out the paperwork and together with his Career Development Facilitator, looked for a full-time job that could sustain himself and his family. He applied for a number of positions.  He also received some assistance with interview clothing and a referral for medical assistance regarding a health issue that could slow him down.

Matt had always been a trucker.  It had been his dream job and he still wanted to be a long haul trucker, but because of a medical issue that caused him to faint once while on the job he had to pull his CDL license. He had been encouraging his previous doctor to sign off on a form saying he could drive long distances, but the doctor refused to do so. Matt had been to a number of doctors that said he could return to work, but the trucker’s union wanted the FIRST doctor to say so.

Robin, the Goodwill Career Development Facilitator, suggested that Matt go to Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) to see if they could get a position for him that did not require him to drive, but would still put him in some capacity in hauling and delivery. Matt filled out the paperwork and went to VR.  He visited the doctor assigned to him. His new physician had influence with the Union and was able to resubmit the work papers that the Union required.  Matt’s CDL was reinstated! He applied for and was hired with a great company soon after and he is now beginning the long journey back to being the man who he always knew he was.

Matt is driving as much as possible these days. He is catching up on the mortgage and multiple bills that they amassed while he was not working. He is happy now that his license was reinstated and he is in a better place mentally, as his inability to work had been wearing on his spirit. Life is getting better and Matt is so happy he chose to take a chance on a new idea and come to the Goodwill Job Connection. It's what we do...
