#MissionMonday - Joe

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

Late last year, Joe came in to Goodwill Manasota’s Veterans’ Services office for help. He explained that he knew about the veterans’ program because he had once participated in a work-study program at Goodwill. He had recently gone through a divorce and now had full custody of his two children, one of whom had a disability and required specialized care.

Due to the demands caring for his children, Joe could no longer handle his scheduled hours at work and lost his job. This plunged him into financial trouble. He was looking for a new job so that he could continue to support his family. His most urgent need was the shut-off notice he had received from FPL; he was also behind on rent and at risk of eviction. Janet reassured Joe that the veterans’ services office could assist. She connected him with the Florida Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) so that his FPL payment could be taken care of.

Janet’s next step was to make sure Joe had the childcare he needed to be able to work. Once that was taken care of, she connected him with the Goodwill human resources team. He was quickly offered an interview and he did a great job. He was hired! Janet even found the financial resources to help Joe with a few other expenses to help tide the family over until Joe could get his first paycheck.

Joe’s friends from the Veterans Services Program still stop by to check in on him frequently. Joe tells them that he loves his job and he is very thankful for the opportunity to work at Goodwill. He is so grateful for that fateful day he stopped in to Goodwill to ask about services.

Joe is glad he had some help when he was dealing with one of the most stressful times in his life. It’s what we do …
