Joe was a Goodwill Team Member who was a proud veteran. When he found himself in a difficult
financial position, he asked his GoodPartner Coach if she knew of any resources where he might find help. His GPC gave him the phone number for Goodwill’s own Veteran Services Program office.
When Joe called the veterans' services team, he learned about the SERV program: the Special Emergency Resources for Veterans Fund. It is a community-funded account that can help a
veteran when there are no other community resources available. Joe told Todd that he was undergoing surgery later that month and he knew he was going to need a month off for recovery and rehabilitation. While he had some paid time off accrued, it was not enough for the whole 30 days. He knew he was going to need assistance with his expenses for part of that time.
The veterans' services team connected Joe with a few of their numerous community veteran partners. These other organizations were able to cover some of his bills while he was out of work. The team also connected Joe with Sarasota Meals on Wheels, a group that would deliver hot meals throughout his recovery process. Thanks to all these resources, Joe “stayed above water” after his surgery.
Now Joe is back at work and has become a regular at the Veterans Services Program's weekly BRAVE (Benefits, Resources and Veterans Education) meetings. He enjoys the camaraderie of his fellow veterans and stops by on Wednesdays for those meetings whenever he can. Joe is glad he learned about the Goodwill Veterans Services Program office.
