Jane made a visit to the Arcadia Job Connection as soon as she arrived in town. She had turned her house in Texas over to her children and moved to Florida to a home she had recently inherited. Once she got to Arcadia, she realized she was going to have her hands full with house repairs, painting, cleaning and yard work. She got started at the Job Connection and on the house at the same time. She was quite busy but she was enjoying herself nonetheless.
Jane was expecting that she would be able to get a job right away. She had a great resume and a wonderful work record. However, she was not getting any interviews. She decided to return to the Job Connection for more help. Her Career Development Facilitator sat next to her as they went online together to complete her Indeed information and to apply for several new jobs. Jane’s bills were piling up and her new property taxes were looming on the horizon. She was more than ready to find a job. At this point, she was ready to expand her job search criteria and applied for part time jobs too. She needed a job—any job. Finally! She interviewed with a company that sold cards and the manager there hired her. It was a good job. Her budget was tight, but she could pay the bills and she liked her supervisor too. The job went well for the first four months. Then, Jane’s supervisor informed her that there would be no work starting in a month and not starting up again until January. Jane knew it was time to go back to the Job Connection.
Jane realized that she really need more than just “any old job.” What she really wanted was a job she could rely on. She need a full-time job with a predictable number of hours each week and no periods of “downtime.” At the Job Connection, Jane learned there was an opening at her local Goodwill. She applied and got the opportunity for a full-time position with no worries that the business would close for a few months each year. Even better, this job also came with a life coach! Jane gladly accepted the job offer.
Nowadays, Jane says things are going great. Her bills are up to date and she has settled into her new community. Jane has made many friends at her new job and she loves the support she gets at work from her Team Leader Coach and her GoodPartner Coach. Jane is both relieved and proud to say that now she has more than “any old job”—she is a Goodwill Team Member!
