Grace was diagnosed with a hearing deficit as a young adult and was deaf in one ear. The good news was that the hearing in her other ear, although not perfect, was sufficient enough to allow her to perform her daily activities.
She could still hear well enough but was aware her hearing was not as good as it once was; she knew eventually she’d need a hearing aid. She also knew they were expensive and there was simply no way to pay for them. With her other health concerns and financial needs, they weren’t high on her list of priorities. So, when she worked on her goal plan with her GoodPartner Coach (a free life coach offered to all Goodwill Manasota Team Members), it was placed in the category of long term goals where it stayed for several years.
One day a co-worker told her she’d called her name several times and wondered why she didn’t answer. Grace knew why – she didn’t hear her. She had to admit her hearing loss was now having a negative impact on her life and a hearing aid was no longer something she could put off. Her co-worker suggested she talk to her Coach about what was going on. Grace’s Coach got to work making calls and researching community resources. Finally, The Lions Club put her in touch with a national organization called “Hear Now,” an agency that partners with local hearing specialists to help low income patients get the hearing aids they need. Grace was told she called at just the right time because they only approve a limited number of applications annually, and she was lucky to be one of them! Grace was so excited and grateful when she got the news.
When she put on her new hearing aids for the first time Grace smiled from ear to ear! It had been a long time since she heard things so clearly and she had nearly forgotten how nice the world sounds. Plus, she didn’t have the worries about how she was going to pay for it. It was truly one of her very best days! She is grateful to her GoodPartner Coach for sticking by her and making this a reality. It’s what we do…
