Evelyn came into a Goodwill Job Connection looking for work in December. She already had a job working part-time for a local retailer but was not getting enough hours to pay her bills. Evelyn knew there were plenty job openings in the community, but she didn’t want just a job. She wanted a job that could help her make a better life for herself. She had heard that Goodwill offered full-time employment AND that Goodwill had programs onsite to help people get their GEDs. Evelyn had always been very interested in getting into the nursing field, but she did not have her high school diploma or GED. If she ever wanted to reach her goals and become a nurse, she needed to get a GED first.
Janet - one of Goodwill’s Career Development Facilitators in the Job Connection - helped Evelyn complete a Goodwill application and arranged an on-the-spot interview with Goodwill’s recruiter. Janet also spent time with Evelyn reviewing job search basics. She completed a Needs Assessment and helped Evelyn create a placement plan so that she would have Plan B in the event that she was not hired at Goodwill.
When Janet followed up with the HR department the next day, she was happy to hear that Evelyn did not need a Plan B. She had been hired and was going to start work on Monday. A few days later Janet reached out to Evelyn to see how everything was going and learned that Evelyn was doing great! Evelyn said she loved working full-time, that she had already connected with her GoodPartner Coach, and that she would be starting GED classes the next week. She was excited that not only would she able to pay her bills, but also that her new employer was going to help her get closer to her ultimate goal—a career in nursing.
Evelyn is happy that Goodwill was there when she went looking for a BETTER job. It’s what we do . . .
