#MissionMonday - Elsa

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - ElsaElsa and her young daughter lived with Elsa’s boyfriend in a small apartment. She and her boyfriend both had jobs and life was going fine until one day Elsa’s boyfriend got laid off. He started searching for a new job but before long they began experiencing financial difficulties. As the months passed and no job turned up, this hardship began to impact their family life and they were getting further behind with all the bills.

The financial stress was too much of a burden on the relationship and it had an impact on Elsa’s work performance too. She was terminated from her job because of her lack of focus and to make matters worse, her boyfriend made friends with the wrong people and he began using drugs—sometimes in the presence of Elsa's daughter.

That’s when she decided it was time to leave.

Elsa and her daughter went to live with her family and even though she felt that she had nowhere else to turn, she was determined that they would not end up on the street. Many months passed, then Elsa applied for a job at Goodwill. She was so happy when the call came for an interview. She was hired that very day.

At last, Elsa felt as though she could gain control of her finances.  At Goodwill, she met with her GoodPartner Coach (a free life coach offered to all Goodwill Manasota Team Members), had an assessment and received some help with setting goals. These goals included developing a budget so that she and her daughter could get their own apartment. Elsa’s GoodPartner Coach sent her to a Goodwill budgeting class and together they worked to create a budget that included saving money for unexpected challenges. Elsa’s Coach helped her apply for funds through the United Way for a deposit on an apartment. Elsa was so happy to find that she was approved and was able to get her housing situation established.

Now, she has a job that gives her financial independence for herself and her child. She feels liberated to know she does not have to struggle any longer. And she has hope for a better future.  Elsa was glad Goodwill was there to hire her and happy her Coach was there when she needed help the most. It’s what we do…
