#MissionMonday - Dave

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

DaveDave graduated from high school and spent a year job-hunting with no luck. One day, he decided to go into a Goodwill Manasota Job Connection office to see if someone could help him find his first job. He met with one of Goodwill’s Career Development Facilitators, Robin, and she asked about his abilities and work experience. Dave told Robin that he did not have any previous work experience nor any particular job skills. He explained that he did not know the first thing about working or applying for jobs. Dave said that so far, he had applied for many entry-level positions and went to numerous interviews, but had not yet received any job offers. Robin recognized that although Dave had many positives qualities, when being interviewed by potential employers he did not come off as someone people wanted to hire. The problem was that he was not good at highlighting his positive qualities.

Dave had a lot of goals: he wanted to move into a place of his own, he wanted to buy a new car, and he was interested in getting a small boat so he could go out fishing on the river. All these goals seemed unattainable since he could not find a job and Dave was becoming very discouraged.

Robin showed Dave websites he could use to look for jobs. She also helped connect him with the local CareerSource office and worked on his interviewing techniques with him. Dave was grateful for the assistance but was still not confident in his interview skills, despite the coaching Robin provided.

Robin realized that Dave needed an advocate, so she called Jo, the customer service representative at the local Labor Solutions office. Jo had also been a Job Connection customer and was happy to help. Robin explained that Dave had many good work qualities, but that he was quite shy and had difficulties expressing himself in an interview. Jo thought Dave deserved to have a chance. She advocated for him with the hiring manager at a local paver company and Dave was offered a job! Without hesitation, he accepted. Robin then helped Dave get work clothing and reviewed basic employability skills with him before his first day of work. She wanted to make sure that not only did Dave GET a job—he would also KEEP it!

That was several months ago. Since then, Dave has done very well at the paver company. He has already received a raise due to his performance. He has also opened a savings account and is working toward all the goals he told Robin about when they first met. The old discouraged Dave is gone—now he sees his future as bright.

It’s what we do . . .
