#MissionMonday- Carlos

In November of 2003, Carlos Yancy walked in to the Selby/Newtown Job Connection office seeking help finding a job. He made an appointment for the next day to see Deborah McBride, the Career Development Facilitator at that Goodwill location.


Deborah conducted an assessment, asking a lot of questions about Carlos’ interests and previous work experience. After they had spoken for a while, Deborah explained that she was moving out of the state and leaving her position at Goodwill. Based on the information Carlos had shared, she was certain that Carlos would be a perfect fit for her job. Carlos liked the idea.


“I was somewhat confused and excited at the same time. I quickly filled out the application for the position," Carlos remembers. "As I completed the application, I smiled to myself. I realized that if I was hired, I would be a block away from my grandparent’s house and on the exact site where my father once owned a game room!”


Carlos was scheduled for an interview and then was invited to return for a second round. The second interview turned out to be with a panel of Goodwill executives, including longtime former CEO Don Roberts and his wife Peggy, current president and CEO Bob Rosinsky, and several vice presidents. He was offered the position. 


Carlos says, “The night before my first day of work I was so excited about my new career and the possibility of being able to assist people in the community where I was born and raised that I couldn’t sleep.”


This December marks Carlos’ 15th anniversary with Goodwill Manasota. He has been “changing lives through the power of work” proudly as a Career Development Facilitator in the Newtown community.


“As I interview customers, I always recall how I felt at that first meeting with Ms. McBride. She was very patient and understanding, and paid close attention to my personal needs and interests in preparing the placement plan," Carlos says. "I would like to thank my co-workers, with special gratitude for the colleagues who sat in on my first interviews with Goodwill 15 years ago and have supported me over the years! “
