#MissionMonday - Bill

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - BillBill is a Vietnam veteran who moved from Kansas to Sarasota this past January. He had his own pool cleaning business and figured that Florida was the perfect spot to set up shop and grow his business. He moved here with no place to live and when his business didn’t take off as quickly as he hoped, he was forced to live out of his truck.

Since he is a veteran, someone told him about Goodwill’s Veteran Services office and he decided to stop in one day to see if they could help him out. He met with Karrie, our Sarasota Veterans Service Advisor to learn his needs. Kerrie referred him to Carlos at our Job Connection office for job search assistance and to Jewish Family & Children’s Service for housing assistance.

The next few weeks we rough for Bill, but he never gave up. He came in to the Job Connection office almost every day to apply for jobs and get assistance from Carlos. He even attended Goodwill’s budgeting classes to understand how he could use his money more wisely and to assist him with getting into a temporary living situation. Carlos and Karrie also did everything they could to assist Bill with all of his needs – from gas cards, to resume review and editing, and referrals to companies across the Sarasota area.

Before long, Bill had obtained a great job and is currently well on his way to finding permanent housing. He had a lot of assistance from Goodwill, but in the end it was Bill’s drive and motivation that kept him from moving back to Kansas with nothing. Goodwill helped Bill achieve his goals by never giving up on him. It’s what we do…
