Bill moved back in with his mom in Sarasota after living out of state for a while. Prior to coming to Sarasota, he accumulated traffic-related fines and ended up with a suspended driver’s license, which made finding work difficult. Troubles aside, his mother was happy to have him back home. She knew that there was a gentleman named Carlos at the Selby Goodwill in Newtown who helped people to find jobs.
Bill visited the Selby/Newtown Goodwill and Carlos was able to help him get a job as a sales associate at Goodwill – a job he could get to on the bus. On his first day of work, he met his Good Partner Coach, who could help him because he worked with a network of other Mission Services Coaches and Career Facilitators who could identify and direct Bill to resources and other human services agencies in the community.
Over the next eight months, Bill identified some goals he would like to reach and some obstacles he needed to overcome. The top three goals for Bill were to pay off his traffic fines, save money, and buy a house. Bill began his journey to financial health and career success through the Certified Role Model Worker Program – from which he successfully graduated – where he took classes in life, work and interpersonal skills.
Bill’s Good Partner Coach put him in touch with Goodwill’s Home Buyer’s Club, where he learned how to check his credit score and negotiate with his creditors to improve that score. Over time, Bill paid off his fines and was able to purchase car insurance. He was so excited that he could now drive to work! Having more mobility and independence allowed Bill to pre-nominate for other jobs at Goodwill. He was happy to see his income growing with the new opportunities he pursued.
The most exciting changes were to come: Bill found and bought that house he wanted. Then he proposed to his girlfriend – and she said “Yes!”
Nowadays, Bill and his wife live together happily in the house he purchased, along with their baby son. He recently told his Good Partner Coach that everything he had worked so hard for had finally come to fruition! His dreams came true with some help from Goodwill. It’s what we do.
