#MissionMonday - Ali

Every Monday, we'll be posting a new story of how our mission has assisted people in the community. Be sure to check back each week for a new and inspirational story of someone who was helped by Goodwill Manasota. Changing lives through the power of work...it's what we do.

#MissionMonday - AliAli is a single mom with two children and had never graduated from high school. She had been working at Goodwill for about a year and a half when her new GoodPartner Coach (a free life coach offered to all Goodwill Manasota Team Members) approached her and asked if she had ever considered going back to school to get her high school diploma. Ali said that she had, but with work and caring for her two young children, she didn’t think it was possible.

Her coach told her about Goodwill’s Workforce Education program, which makes it possible for people to go back to school while working. Ali thought it might be worth a try so she met with her coach to complete the enrollment paperwork.

Ali was able to attend school one of the two days on the clock and the other day of class, she was scheduled off so she could attend on her own time.  Things were going pretty well for Ali, and her coach noticed a new spring in her step.  She is not a person who “toots her own horn,” but it was obvious that she was feeling very good about the fact that she was accomplishing something that she didn’t think she could.

The road to graduation has had its ups and downs.  There were times when she wasn’t able to attend class because one of her kids was sick and she needed to be with them to care for them, or take them to the doctor. But when life got hard and she was ready to give up, her coach would encourage her to keep her eyes on the prize. She was creating a future for herself and her kids.

She kept going, one step at a time.  One class, one assignment.  She didn’t give up.  She didn’t quit. She continued to attend classes and she was diligent to keep up with her homework assignments.  Finally, she learned that she is going to graduate!  All her hard work has paid off and on August 10, along with five other students, Ali will proudly receive her high school diploma!  Among those cheering her on and sharing her joy that night will be her children, her parents and other family members, her friends, her managers and, of course, her GoodPartner Coach.  Changing lives through the power of work and education… here at Goodwill, it’s what we do.
