Dan was hired by Goodwill last year. Although he had been trying to find a job for a while, he hadn’t worked in four years. Dan thought his hearing impairment and seizure disorder were scaring employers away. He had worked before but those positions had seemed like dead-end jobs. He was looking for something that would allow him to help pay to the family’s bills while offering him opportunities to grow.
Getting back into the workforce was a bit intimidating for Dan but going to work at Goodwill gave him the feeling of a fresh, new start. Earning a paycheck – especially in a position that came with health insurance – gave Dan a sense of contributing to the family’s finances and doing his part.
Dan had not had a seizure for three months prior to being hired at Goodwill. He was a little worried because the seizures were triggered by stress, and Dan knew that starting a new job was going to be stressful. Would he fit in? Would he be able to learn his job as a sales associate fast enough? Would he end up, once again, with a dead-end job or would he have opportunities to grow?
Dan was delighted to learn that Goodwill offered a very supportive work environment. Through conversations with his managers and GoodPartner Coach, he began to realize that working the sales floor and providing quality customer care were skills to be learned over time and that Goodwill was committed to providing the time and patience for him to grow into his responsibilities.
Dan’s co-workers were very helpful, too. He learned from his fellow team members the importance of teamwork. Now he, too, is quick to lend a helping hand to others as well as to ask for assistance if he needs it. Dan is vocal at the daily huddles and often shows his knowledge of Goodwill’s mission and core values and how they pertain to the work environment.
Recently, Dan’s GoodPartner Coach enrolled him the Goodwill Works program, which provides classes to address life skills, and work and interpersonal skills. He is currently working on completing the classes needed for his Role Model Worker badge.
Dan is thankful that he finally has a job that invests in his personal and professional development. When he thinks about the jobs he has held in the past, he realizes that Goodwill is a very different kind of employer. Dan says, “Goodwill is the best. They care about me and I feel I have a family here!”
