I’m willing to bet you’ve seen the “Think Before You Donate” infographic somewhere on social media at least two or three times over the past few years. It popped up in my newsfeed on Facebook yet again this week so I decided to take a minute and dispel the rumors you may have heard about Goodwill.
If you’re not familiar with the infographic I’m referring to, it basically lists several well-known non-profit organizations, provides a few UNTRUE "facts", and then states that there are better organizations to donate to. I can’t speak on behalf of the other organizations in the image, but I can tell you what I know about Goodwill.
First of all, right off the bat you should know that “Mark Curran” is NOT the CEO of Goodwill. While I’m sure there is probably someone out there named Mark Curran, I can confidently say that he is not a Goodwill affiliate. The CEO of Goodwill Industries International is Jim Gibbons and he definitely does NOT earn 2.3 million per year. You probably don’t know this, but Goodwills are actually run as independent territories. It's almost like a non-profit franchise where we pay a licensing fee to Goodwill International but other than that we run our own show. This means that we have both a local CEO and a local Board of Directors and all of the money we raise stays right here in our community.
The CEO of Goodwill Manasota is Bob Rosinsky.
The autonomy of the different Goodwills is what allows us to tailor the programs and services we provide to meet the needs of our specific local community. Goodwill Manasota covers Sarasota, Manatee, Hardee, and DeSoto counties. All the money that comes in from the sale of donations in our stores stays within our community and goes toward helping fund our mission of changing lives through the power of work. This is not just the mission of Goodwill Manasota but of the entire Goodwill organization. Goodwill is all about providing people a hand up not a hand out, and works to provide jobs and job skills to those who are considered unemployable or who are having a hard time finding work. This means that any time you walk into a Goodwill store you are seeing our mission in action. Sorting, hanging, pricing, and selling the items YOU donate are what provide jobs to those who may have otherwise not been able to find employment. And what’s even more amazing is that Goodwill works to help its employees become more skilled, more educated, and more employable so that they can achieve both their professional and personal goals in the future, even if those future goals don’t include Goodwill!
The work we do to help others is not limited to just Goodwill employees either. Goodwill Manasota has multiple Job Connection Centers attached to stores throughout our area where ANYONE can come in and receive free assistance in finding a job. There are also a TON of free classes offered in our various community rooms, as well as a program dedicated entirely to helping veterans in need. If you’re ever interested in learning more about Goodwill Manasota and the services we provide with the funds generated by your donations, come to one of our monthly Lunch and Learns! And the next time you see the “Think Before You Donate” infographic floating around, share what you know to help us end the negative rumors about Goodwill!
